Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery

The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) is Australia’s second-oldest museum and is centrally located on Hobart’s historic waterfront.

TMAG embraces art, history and science and its site includes some of the most significant heritage buildings in the country.

Visitors can learn about Tasmania’s history, explore the state’s links with Antarctica, admire significant colonial artworks and get to know some remarkable animals, including the thylacine (or Tasmanian Tiger).

There are always new things to see at TMAG, as it has a great program of exhibitions that changes year-round, and there is truly something for all ages to enjoy.

Join a free guided tour or simply browse the galleries, including TMAG’s special space designed just for the under 7s, mapiya lumi | around here, which has just celebrated its first birthday.

A highlight for families visiting TMAG, the gallery has been designed with the child’s perspective in mind, and allows them to explore Tasmania as a ‘little big home’.

It has a dedicated space for little ones aged 0-3 as well as a range of exciting spaces for children aged 3-7 to discover. Entry to mapiya lumi | around here is free, however bookings are recommended via the TMAG website.

As well as exhibitions, visitors can also enjoy exciting public programs including Discovery Days and School Holiday Programs. Make sure you check the TMAG website and social media channels to find out the latest news about what’s on.

Entry to TMAG is free – even though of course it always welcomes donations to help it continue to provide enriching experiences for all its visitors.
