Free Stuff to do in Canberra for families

Who said you don’t get something for nothing?? They were wrong! Canberra is not just the capital of Australia, it is jam-packed with FREE stuff!!

So, let us tell you how to spend a day or even a week in and around Canberra with the kids for free (some might cost just a little).

So, what are you waiting for? Here are 15 things to do with the family in Canberra –

  1. Take a ride on the FREE City Loop bus to get your bearings and see many of the major sights.

  2. Pop into the National Library on a hot or rainy day and visit the “Word Play” and explore all the free and fun activities Art & Craft, word searches, ipad games and much more.

  3. Teach the kids that money doesn’t grow on trees and see real robots live in action on a trip to the Royal Australian Mint. The tour of the Mint is free!

  4. Let the kids burn some energy at the National Arboretum. It has an awesome Pod Playground that is shaped like a giant acorn filled with cubbies, nest swings, net tunnels and a spiral slide. Whilst the kids are playing, the adults can admire the spectacular scenery from the safety of firm land.

  5. Experience what homestead life was like at Lanyon Homestead. Have the kids compare them to now – afterwards maybe not so many complaints at chore time!

  6. Show the kids what life of a soldier is like at the Australian War Memorial where youngsters can dodge sniper fire in a First World War trench, take control of an Iroquois helicopter and peer through the periscope of a Cold War submarine in the Discovery Zone.

  7. Get the kids heart rate up with a trek up to the Mount Ainslie lookout. It offers an impressive and well-earned view after reaching from the top.

  8. The kids will love the Museum of Old Democracy at Old Parliament House. Learn about democracy and get creative during the free daily craft activities in PlayUp.

  9. Grab a bike and head around Lake Burley Griffin. There is a stack of picturesque routes to choose from and the little ones will love feeding the ducks.

  10. Join an expert guide on a tour around Parliament House. See both chambers, the Marble Foyer, Great Hall, Member’s Hall and the Parliament art collection. If it is school holidays, there are plenty of kids activities that they will love.

  11. The National Museum of Australia has a children specific area called KSpace that is game-ified and an interactive experience. Work together to build a time-travel pod. The kids will learn, have fun and work together to collaborate with a team of other kids.

  12. Ascend up Red Hill for awesome views over the whole city!

  13. Head over to the National Capital Exhibition and discover how the city went from the drawing board to reality.

  14. Pack a lunch and hike to Gibraltar Falls, Canberra’s only waterfall. It’s a gentle picturesque walk.
