ASIAN FOLDING FAN Create an easy Asian folding fan out of paper and craft sticks. Crafty Kids Materials
  • A4 or letter size paper
  • Glue stick
  • Scissors
  • Large craft sticks
  • Colored pencils, markers or crayons
  • Glue gun, string, and beads (optional)
Safety Tips Keep the glue gun out of young children’s reach. Steps   To make the fan, you will need 2 sheets of A4 or Letter size paper. 1 You can leave the sheets undecorated or you may draw, paint or stamp on them as you please. I decorated mine using vegetable prints. 2 Your 2 sheets of paper should more or less have the same design or color theme. 4 Fold the paper accordion-style (back-and-forth folding), starting from one short edge of the paper. The folds should be about half an inch wide. 5 Continue until you’ve folded the entire paper. 6 Trim off any excess paper after the last fold. 7 Repeat steps 4 to 6 for the second sheet of paper. 8 Glue the two folded sheets of paper along one edge. 9 Arrange the folds into one pile. Fold the pile in the middle. 10 Tie a string around the middle fold. 11 Glue the two inner sides of the paper together. The result may probably look familiar since this is the typical origami fan. You may stop here if you like but if you want a round folding fan, continue with the next steps. 12 To make a handle for your fan, glue a craft stick each along the outer sides of the fan. You can paint the craft sticks beforehand. 14 Once the glue dries, try bringing the two craft sticks all the way around to open up the fan.  Moving them the opposite way will close the fan. 15 As an option, you can attach a string on the outer face of one craft stick. Use a glue gun to fix it in place. You can even string some beads at the ends of the string. 16 Tie the ends of the string around the opposite craft stick to keep the fan open. 17 The string can likewise keep the fan folded shut. 18
