Darwin

Darwin is dynamic, different, diverse and constantly evolving as Australia’s most cosmopolitan city. It has a relaxed tropical lifestyle highlighted by many cultural festivals, food and craft markets. It boasts a range of recreational facilities, bushwalks, attractions and markets, there is plenty to do in Darwin with families.

Having been almost entirely rebuilt twice, once due to the air raids during the War and again after being devastated by Cyclone Tracy in 1974, Darwin is now one of Australia’s most modern capital cities. Darwin is closer to Jakarta than it is to Sydney, and closer to Singapore than it is to Melbourne, so it’s no surprise that Darwin looks outward to Asia as much as it looks inland to the rest of Australia. In Darwin you can take things as fast or as slow as you like. From bushwalks and suburban markets to being submerged with saltwater crocodiles, it really is your choice of things to do in this tropical city. Darwin has developed into a thriving, vibrant place, renowned for its colourful characters and large variety of cafes, restaurants, pubs and licenced sporting clubs. It is also the entry point to some of the world’s greatest natural and cultural attractions, that are located within a two to three hour drive from the capital. They can be experienced year round, although the ‘wet’ means they are inaccessible at times. The Wet season, spanning from November until April, is characterized by high levels of humidity followed by monsoonal rains and storms. The ‘Dry” season, from May until October, is characterized by warm, dry, sunny days and cool nights. Darwin literally is a HOT destination. While Aussies in southern parts of Australia are all rugged up on the couch under a blanket in their winter woolies, those in Darwin are basking in the warmth of the sun. It’s the perfect winter getaway for families! It is perfect for the next school holidays – make sure you go – it is a family haven!
