SUMMARY:Stand Out by Tara Mathews
DESCRIPTION:Stand Out is an exhibition by local young artist Tara Mathews. Using bright colours and a distinctive style\, Tara dedicates their exhibition to the queer women and gender-diverse individuals who feel like they don’t fit in. The artworks visually represent the alienating feeling of not quite fitting the mould\, but also the solidarity in knowing that there is a whole community of people who are facing the same struggle. While it is challenging to feel different from those around you\, these differences are what make you unique and allow you to stand out. \nShowing at Airtime flags\, an outdoor exhibition space at Altona Meadows Skate Park that showcases works by young artists from Melbourne’s west. \n\n\n“Stand Out is a response to the queer experience of feeling different from everyone around you. In this exhibition\, I aim to visually express the ways that I\, and others like me\, feel out of place\, while also reaffirming that even though queer people can feel like they don’t belong\, there is a whole community that experience the same feelings. It can sometimes be a struggle choosing either to blend in and act like something you aren’t\, or to make the choice to be yourself and stand out. Even though being different can sometimes feel like a burden\, it is those differences that make you who you are.” – Tara Mathews \n\n\nPresented as part of Midsumma Westside

SUMMARY:Tackers Junior Sailing Program (7 – 12 Year Olds)
DESCRIPTION:Royal Yacht Club of Victoria is the perfect venue for families\, and children in particular\, to learn to sail. The Club understands the importance of quality training for both adults and children. Tackers is a program aimed at giving every junior Australian the opportunity to go sailing in a professional\, safe and fun environment. \n\n\n \nThe Tackers Junior sailing program is a program for primary school aged children 7-12 years of age. Designed around kids\, for kids\, the Tackers junior sailing program seeks to provide a vibrant new approach to sail training that recognises that the learning styles of children differs from those of adults. We also offer Youth OutThere programs for 13 – 17 year olds and Adult keelboat programs for those coming into sailing later in life \n\n\n \nThe program is based around some core values that inform everything that is delivered and communicated about the program. Kids don’t need to have any sailing experience and they don’t need to have their own boat. All the equipment\, including life jackets and boats\, is provided. They don’t even need to be a member of the Club to participate\, though of course we would be delighted if ultimately they decided to join up. \n\n\n \nTo enrol in a course you can click the course you are interested in and enrol online. \n\n\n \nTackers Values: \n\n\n \n\n\nKid Centric \n\n\n\n\n\nNon-competitive\, fun and social \n\n\n\n\n\nDelivered by professional\, young\, instructors \n\n\n\n\n\nProgram consistent across locations \n\n\n\n\n\nBranded modern presentations \n\n\n\n\n\nTarget kids outside of existing yacht club membership \n\n\n\n\n\nValue for money relative to programs in other sports \n\n\n\n\n\nGraduate pathway over several steps and seasons \n\n\n\n\n \nTackers Intro \n\n\n \nIdeal for first-time sailors that are not yet ready to commit to a full Tackers 1 \n\n\n \nTacker Intro is the first day of a Tackers 1 course and is great for children that are not sure if they will enjoy Sailing.  We keep a spot available for the Tackers Intro children to continue for the full Tackers 1 course if they enjoy the Intro. \n\n\n \nTackers 1 – Having Fun \n\n\n \nIdeal for first-time sailors \n\n\n \nTackers 1 introduces children to the basics of sailing in a safe and exciting environment. No prior sailing experience is required. Participants learn how to rig their boat\, sail across the wind\, steer\, stop\, and return safely to shore — all while playing games and making new friends.  Two children per boat. \n\n\n \nSkills covered include: \n\n\n \n\n\nBasic boat parts and rigging \n\n\n\n\n\nSailing across the wind \n\n\n\n\n\nSteering and stopping \n\n\n\n\n\nSafety on and around the water \n\n\n\n\n \nTackers 2 – Tricks and Techniques \n\n\n \nFor sailors who have completed Tackers 1 \n\n\n \nTackers 2 builds on the fundamentals with kids now sailing in a boat by themselves and introduces more sailing skills and confidence. Children learn to sail in different directions\, improve boat control\, and begin racing-style activities in a fun\, supportive setting. \n\n\n \nSkills covered include: \n\n\n \n\n\nSailing upwind and downwind \n\n\n\n\n\nTacking and gybing \n\n\n\n\n\nImproving boat balance and control \n\n\n\n\n\nCapsize recovery \n\n\n\n\n\nIntroduction to sailing courses \n\n\n\n\n \nTackers 3 – Sailing Fast \n\n\n \nFor confident sailors ready to advance \n\n\n \nTackers 3 focuses on refining skills and sailing faster with better control.
