SUMMARY:Stand Out by Tara Mathews
DESCRIPTION:Stand Out is an exhibition by local young artist Tara Mathews. Using bright colours and a distinctive style\, Tara dedicates their exhibition to the queer women and gender-diverse individuals who feel like they don’t fit in. The artworks visually represent the alienating feeling of not quite fitting the mould\, but also the solidarity in knowing that there is a whole community of people who are facing the same struggle. While it is challenging to feel different from those around you\, these differences are what make you unique and allow you to stand out. \nShowing at Airtime flags\, an outdoor exhibition space at Altona Meadows Skate Park that showcases works by young artists from Melbourne’s west. \n\n\n“Stand Out is a response to the queer experience of feeling different from everyone around you. In this exhibition\, I aim to visually express the ways that I\, and others like me\, feel out of place\, while also reaffirming that even though queer people can feel like they don’t belong\, there is a whole community that experience the same feelings. It can sometimes be a struggle choosing either to blend in and act like something you aren’t\, or to make the choice to be yourself and stand out. Even though being different can sometimes feel like a burden\, it is those differences that make you who you are.” – Tara Mathews \n\n\nPresented as part of Midsumma Westside

DESCRIPTION:Go on a scavenger hunt around the Market to find out all about the food you eat\, how to help the environment and lots of other cool things about your favourite Market. \nAlong the way you’ll meet our friendly traders who will help you solve the clues and become a member of the South Melbourne Market Explorers Club! \nHow does it work? \n\nPick up a clue sheet at the Market Office in Centre Aisle or other locations around the Market.\nCarefully read each of the clues.\nTo answer the questions\, you will have to find the right stall. Sometimes there will be one specific trader you need to find\, for other questions you can choose your favourite.\nOn the back of the map you will find the traders grouped together by the kinds of things they sell. Find a trader in the category and look at the coordinates (a coloured letter and a number). On the top and bottom of the map you will find the numbers\, and on the sides\, the letters. Follow the line down from the number and across from the letter – where they join is where the trader is! This can be tricky\, but a grown-up can help.\nOnce you have solved all the clues\, bring your answer sheet to the Market Office to receive your Market Explorers Club Card and members reward! \n\nMarket Explorers Club Card rewards \nMarket Explorer Club members receive a special club reward at the start of each new season (summer\, autumn\, winter and spring). Bring your card to the Market Office to collect your reward. \nOpen every Wednesday\, Friday\, Saturday and Sunday from 8am.
