SUMMARY:BALLARAT WINTER FESTIVAL RETURNS THIS JUNE TO WARM UP THE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS
DESCRIPTION:The Ballarat Winter Festival is back from Saturday 27 June to Sunday 19 July to transform the region into Victoria’s very own winter playground. Spanning three weeks across the VIC\, SA and NSW school holidays\, the 2026 program is packed with fun and affordable activities that proves the ultimate winter escape is right in our own backyard. \nFrom decadent hot chocolates to medieval magic\, this year’s program sees many festival favourites return even bigger and better than ever. Whether you’re a local or escaping the big city\, you don’t have to venture far to find a winter wonderland. \nSweet tooths can rejoice as the Hot Choc Showdown is set to return with a city-wide celebration of winter’s favourite comfort drink. Drink your way through the city and experience the delicious range of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic hot chocolates before voting for the ultimate winner. It’s the perfect way to warm up before exploring the rest of the festivities. This year will see over 30 custom hot choc creations from local vendors including cafe’s\, bars\, bakeries and more. \nBeyond the hot chocolate trail\, Ballarat will be bursting with things to see and do: \n\nThe Pop-Up Ice Rink: Lace up your skates and step onto the ice right in the city centre! Operating throughout the festival\, the rink offers 45-minute sessions perfect for a quick afternoon activity or evening group outing under the stars. Plus\, there will be dedicated themed nights\, skating lessons\, and special discounts which means taking the whole family onto the ice is more accessible than ever.\nWinter Wonderlights (26 June – 19 July): Sovereign Hill is set to come alive with stunning light projections\, music\, faux snow\, wintry treats\, and a magical winter glow. Whether you’re visiting during the day (trying your hand at gold panning) or grabbing one of the new night passes\, you’re sure to be captivated by everything the heritage sight has to offer. This year\, Main Street will be filled with local storytelling bringing the Industrial Revolution to life complete with sparks\, flames\, steam and more.\nKnights of Fire: Step back in time into a fiery\, medieval fairytale at Kryal Castle. Australia’s only medieval castle will host roaring stunt displays\, majestic knights\, illusionist wizards\, and beautiful snow queens. It’s the ultimate interactive playground where kids can learn the art of sword-fighting school or even craft their own magical potions. Plus\, parents can cozy up with a mulled wine as all the action plays out.\nHidden: (9-11 July): This July\, Creative Ballarat unveils Hidden – a three-day event that transforms Civic Hall into a living\, breathing landscape of air\, colour and sensation. Six local artists reimagine the space through large-scale inflatable works that invite you to move beyond observation and into experience – to explore\, touch\, listen and follow your curiosity wherever it leads.\nBallarat Wildlife Park: Cap off your school holiday bucket list by getting up close with some of Australia’s most famous native animals\, offering the perfect daytime escape for all members of the family. While there\, enjoy lunch in at their cafe or bring along a picnic to have outdoors while surrounded by the Kangaroos. It’s a must visit destination for animal lovers young and old.\n\nIf you’re already thinking ahead to the winter school holidays\, let the Ballarat Winter Festival make it easy for you. With unforgettable events located just an hour and a half away from Melbourne\, there’s no better time to pack up the car and see everything that Ballarat has to offer. \nMore information: ballaratwinterfestival.com.au

SUMMARY:Christmas in July Festival returns to The Rocks
DESCRIPTION:Sydney’s favourite winter celebration is back as the Christmas in July Festival returns to The Rocks from 10–19 July 2026\, transforming the historic precinct into a glowing European-inspired winter village. \nFollowing a hugely successful 10-day run last year\, the free-entry festival is set to bring back its signature mix of snowfall moments\, fairy-lit laneways\, live music\, artisan markets\, festive food\, and cosy winter experiences for all ages. \nAcross ten magical nights\, visitors can wander through rows of traditional European-style wooden chalets set against The Rocks’ sandstone streets\, showcasing over 30 vendors offering handmade gifts\, festive treats\, winter drinks\, and immersive food experiences inspired by Christmas markets in France\, Germany and the Alps. \nA highlight returns in the form of Snow Lane in Kendall Lane\, where snow falls beneath glowing lights\, surrounded by mulled wine bars\, raclette\, fondue\, hot chocolates\, winter desserts\, fire pits\, and curated artisan shopping. \nChristmas in July Festival has quickly become a Sydney winter tradition—an invitation to wrap up warm\, gather with friends\, and enjoy the simple joy of festive food\, music\, and atmosphere in one of the city’s most iconic locations. \nAs Festival Director Vincent Hernandez puts it: \n“Walking through glowing chalets\, sharing mulled wine under fairy lights\, and watching snow fall in The Rocks has become something people truly make part of their winter traditions.”

SUMMARY:Australian Youth Orchestra | Brave New Worlds
DESCRIPTION:For the first time in over 30 years\, the Australian Youth Orchestra (AYO) comes to Darwin with a thrilling program conducted by the dynamic Antony Hermus. \nThe concert features Shostakovich’s haunting Cello Concerto No. 1\, the sweeping gestures of Beethoven’s ‘Eroica’ Symphony\, and Brett Dean’s powerful ‘Testament’. Internationally acclaimed cellist and AYO alumna\, Charlotte Miles\, joins as soloist\, bringing intensity and nuance to Shostakovich’s powerful work with its rhythmic textures and obsessive motifs. \nComposed over 150 years apart\, both works chart a stylistic evolution from modernist introspection to Romantic grandeur but are united by themes of heroism\, defiance\, and emotional intensity. \nBrett Dean’s ‘Testament’ is the contemporary composer’s response to Beethoven’s struggles with deafness and despair but also his resilience and determination – that same spirit that drives Beethoven’s ‘Eroica’\, originally dedicated to Napoleon\, was a revolutionary work that broke musical conventions and celebrated individual heroism and struggle. \nTogether\, these pieces form a compelling narrative of courage\, transformation\, and artistic rebellion – perfectly suited to a youth orchestra stepping boldly into new territory. \n“An AYO concert is like a double espresso. So much energy and commitment along with exceptional musical performance” – Audience Member\, 2025

From beachside sunset feasts to colourful cultural performances\, it’s a feast for the senses. \nWant more? Visit a pearl farm\, join the camel conga line for a sunset ride along picture-perfect Cable Beach and discover ancient dinosaur footprints at Gantheaume Point. Then as darkness descends and conditions are just right\, witness the natural phenomenon of the Staircase to the Moon at Roebuck Bay. \nThe welcoming Kimberley town of Broome is a two-and-a-half-hour flight north of Perth.

SUMMARY:Space Neighbours on Uranus
DESCRIPTION:They say you can’t choose your neighbours\, even in outer space. \nUranus is four times bigger than Earth but that’s still not enough space for two neighbouring aliens. Sharing a fence line and not much else\, the two strange beings drive each other up the wall and into orbit. They love to hate and squabble at every opportunity. Don’t even get them started on yucky cooking smells. \nWhen the arrival of a new creature puts their arguments into perspective\, the aliens must find a way to live as themselves\, as well as side by side. \nWritten and directed by the acclaimed artist Nathan Maynard (Palawa) and designed by master creature maker Bryony Anderson\, Space Neighbours on Uranus is a funny\, powerful exploration of home\, no matter what planet you live on.
