SUMMARY:Ready Set Disco! – Bringing generations together to dance the night away
DESCRIPTION:The City of Melville is inviting the community to dust off their dancing shoes and hit the dance floor together at Ready Set Disco! — the City’s very first intergenerational disco event. \nTaking place on Friday\, 17 July at Blue Gum Community Centre\, the all-ages community event will bring together children\, parents\, grandparents\, carers\, friends and neighbours for a night of music\, dancing and fun in a safe and welcoming environment. \nFeaturing a live DJ\, dazzling disco lights and a photo booth\, the alcohol-free event has been designed to encourage connection across generations while celebrating the joy of movement\, music and community spirit. \nCity of Melville Mayor Katy Mair said the City was proud to deliver events that encouraged social inclusion and active community participation. \n“Ready Set Disco! is all about bringing people of all ages together to connect\, laugh and make memories in a fun\, inclusive and energetic way\,” said Mayor Mair. \n“Whether you’re eight or 80\, music and dancing have a wonderful way of connecting people and building a stronger sense of community. \n“We know community connection is incredibly important for wellbeing\, and sometimes the best conversations happen between songs on the dance floor. \n“This event is a chance for grandparents to show off their retro dance moves\, while younger generations teach everyone the latest trends and try not to be too embarrassed as their parents give them a go.” \nThe event is being promoted in partnership with Act Belong Commit\, reflecting the City’s commitment to supporting positive\, community-based activities for all ages. \nResearch continues to show strong social\, emotional and health benefits are linked to dancing and intergenerational activities. \nA 2026 qualitative evidence synthesis published in the Journal of Dance Medicine & Science found intergenerational dance programs can improve confidence\, social connection and wellbeing for both younger and older participants. \nResearchers also found older adults reported feeling more empowered and socially engaged through shared dance experiences. \nA 2020 study published in Frontiers in Psychology found intergenerational dance projects positively supported older adults’ social and emotional wellbeing while helping foster meaningful connections between generations. \nAdditional research has shown dancing can support physical health\, reduce stress\, improve mood and help combat social isolation.
