Katherine

Katherine is adventure territory. It boasts the magnificent Nitmiluk Gorge. If you are looking to swim in cool waterholes, have a traditional camp dinner under the stars, discover diverse wildlife or learn more about the traditional owners – there is something for all families to do and see in the region.

Katherine is the NT’s fourth largest town and is ideally positioned at the crossroads for WA, Darwin, down to Alice and near the turnoff for QLD. It is 312km from Darwin on good sealed roads and is perfect to use as a base to explore what the area has to offer. Swim in cool natural waterholes, have a traditional camp dinner under the stars, discover diverse wildlife or learn more about the traditional owners of the land. Nitmiluk National Park is owned by the local Jawoyn people and Katherine Gorge is the main attraction of the park. It’s a series of 13 deep sandstone gorges carved out by the Katherine River on its journey from Arnhem Land to the Timor Sea. Located 30km out of Katherine, the magnificent gorges offer walking, swimming, canoeing, boating and even flying through them – something for everyone to do and for the kids to love. Tours are available. Cutta Cutta Caves is the Territory’s only publicly accessible tropical limestone cave systems. Delve 15 metres below the surface to see the limestone formations and five different species of bats. Situated in the heart of Katherine, the Katherine Hot Springs are a favourite for many and provide a safe environment for all the family to have a swim. The Low Level Nature Reserve is a great spot to have a picnic or throw a line in to try and catch a Barramundi. Katherine is a must for travelling families in the Top End with so many nature based things to do, that there is something for everyone to enjoy and kids to be entertained.
