Clarence - Activities and Other Stuff

The city of Clarence on Hobart’s eastern shore has some great places to visit and things to do for families. Clarence boasts a fantastic network of tracks, trails and beaches for easy walking and cycling with stunning views over the Derwent Estuary and Mount Wellington.

Family fun amidst Clarence’s soaring heights

On the eastern banks of Hobart, Clarence has hills and mountains as its backdrop. This means families get plenty of places to see and explore, and some stunning heights to ascend for picture-perfect views.

A lot of kids activities in Clarence are situated in the outdoors – the city is full of exhilarating entertainment. While walking through some of Clarence’s many tracks and trails, there are helpful signs along the way with information about the history of the area. We recommend taking the Tangara Trail, which is also suitable for horse-riding if you want to mix up your method of travel. It’s safe to say there are so many kids’ activities around, with Flagstaff Hill and Craigow Hill right on Clarence’s doorstep!

Bellerive Village is the natural starting point for easy family walks. The kids will love the Bellerive Bluff Fort with its enormous 19th century cannons. Follow this up with fish and chips and fun in the playground near Bellerive Beach.

Shred it up at the new Kangaroo Bay Skate Park. The park was designed by a local designer with significant input by the local skating fraternity, so you already know it’ll be great fun. It includes an international standard competition street course and bowl.

Rosny Farm is a unique cultural centre in Clarence. The 1815 barn and farmhouse is a great insight into how families lived in early Australia. There are also great exhibitions to see in the old Schoolhouse and school holiday programs. Rosny Farm is open to the public on Wednesdays to Sundays 11-5, and is a fantastic change of pace from all of the walking and exploring that you’ll inevitably do while in Clarence.

Blundstone Arena is just around the corner. In the summer you may be able to catch a few cricket games, while in the winter there are plenty of AFL matches on offer to be entertained.

The Zoodoo Zoo is one of the best family activities in Clarence. Head across the Derwent River to the Coal River Valley to find plenty of friendly native animals, while you can also become a Zookeeper for a Day if you want to be king or queen of the animals. Kids love zoos, and this one won’t disappoint!

For more fun things to do in Clarence, there are some terrific day trips for the family to embark on. Step back in time and visit Richmond, a historic village nestled in the Coal Valley. Try the bakery for some of Australia’s best pies, and don’t be afraid of soaking up the rich detail of the area – it’s quaint nature will take you back in time.

Richmond has the oldest stone bridge in Australia, built in 1882, which is a must visit. Make sure you walk across it and look at the fine craftsmanship that it took to make this piece of Australian history. The Richmond Gaol gives kids the opportunity to see firsthand what life was like for the convicts who came to Australia all those years ago. Old Hobart Town gives you a feel for what Hobart used to be like in an amazing model village. There are lots of old-fashioned shops and cafes around and an amazing lolly shop which the kids will be sure to love visiting!

Clarence and Richmond have so many things to do for families and kids activities, you are sure to find yourself coming back for more and more!
