A trip to Devonport with (or without) kids would not be complete without visiting the Don River Railway. This place has the largest collection of working diesel and loco trains in Tasmania. Take a 30-minute tour on a vintage train, where the experience has recreated the essence of an authentic working passenger railway from yesteryear. Known as one of Australia’s finest heritage passenger carrying railways, Don River Railway is only five minutes out of Devonport, making it a cheap and easy fun day out for the entire family to enjoy. 

Find one of Devonport’s best kept secrets at the Bluff Playground. Located between the Mersey Bluff headland and the mouth of the Mersey River, it’s great for a family day-out, an excursion or a hangout spot while waiting to board the Spirit!

On the Mersey River, Waterfront Mini Golf is one of the more fun things to do in Devonport. With 18 holes to play, the course is surrounded by water features and native gardens. You can also play a thrilling round under lights at night. BBQ and picnic areas are available and there’s a great café on site to quench your thirst after some family competition. 

Although some of Devonport’s rivers and coastline are scenic, it’s mostly best to head to an indoor venue if you fancy having a dip. Splash Devonport Aquatic and Leisure Centre is the best place in town to head to. The community centre has pools ready for kids to splash around in, while cafes and full gym and exercise classes provide entertainment for everyone in the family.

When it comes to food options, Devonport is rich in restaurants and tasty day-trips. If you’re in need of a delicious health kick, make the 10-minute journey from Devonport to The Berry Patch. This spot combines wonderful food options with an authentic farm experience – you can just as easily sit down for lunch as you can go and pick your own sweet and delicious berries in a ‘Pick Your Own’ field. These organic berries make for a terrific gift – head to the farm shop on your way out to take some pre-picked fruit with you. The kids will be entertained by the fun outdoor farm themed areas – it’s not just a terrific place to stop for some food, it’s also a cool family activity in Devonport!
