Devonport
Devonport is situated on the Mersey River is the home port of the vehicle and passenger ferry, The Spirit of Tasmania. This is an important link for all of Tasmania to the mainland and they sail daily to Melbourne. It is also the arrival point for many visitors to Tassie. (You should see them turn around in the river - fascinating and the kids will love it.) The town has a great coastline and popular walking tracks lead from the city centre, along the Mersey River foreshore parklands, all the way around to Mersey Bluff Beach. Discover why Bass Strait is so infamous by visiting The Bass Strait Maritime Museum. You can learn about the shipwrecks, natural history and trade that make up Tasmania’s history. You can even take the helm and captain a 1910 steamer into the Mersey River or guide her through the heads of Port Philip Bay. It is an exhilarating simulated experience that everyone can enjoy without leaving dry land. For those that have more time, take two-hour sailing trip aboard the recently restored Julie Burgess Ketch. A visit to The Bass Strait Maritime Museum gives you a real insight into Devonport and its stormy seas. An activity that everyone in the family will enjoy. A trip to Devonport with (or without) kids would not be complete without visiting the Don River Railway. This place has a large collection of working diesel and loco trains in Tasmania. Take a 30 minute tour on a vintage train, where the experience has recreated the essence of an authentic working passenger railway from yesteryear. On the Mersey River, Waterfront Mini Golf is loads of fun with 18 holes to play, surrounded by water features and under lights at night. BBQ and picnic area available and has a great café.
