Across the other side of the Plenty River, there is a wide variety of natural bushland, gorges and hills to explore. Native animals abound. Echidnas, wombats, kangaroos and abundant birdlife, call the area home in places like Hawkestowe Park and Yan Yean Reservior (it’s not unusual to see mobs of kangaroos grazing on the sides of Yan Yean or Plenty Roads).
The jewel in the crown of the north is Funfields - Melbourne’s Premier Theme Park is located in Whittlesea which is only 40 mins from the CBD along the Western Ring Road. It offers a great mix of exciting thrill rides, tobogganing, go-karting (suitable for juniors too) and a fantastic aqua park with a four lane hi-speed water slide, the new Typhoon Waterslide and the scary Gravity Wave. There is ample space and facilities for picnicking and BBQing! A great day out.
The area also has farm gate cafes and stores for fruit and cheese that make for a pleasant stopping place for a bite to eat or a coffee. The area also has some great indoor options too.
