King Island Council

Whilst King Island is famously known for two things – seafood, especially lobster (crayfish), and King Island dairy products, it also has much more to offer for families. Here’s some of the things to do and most are for FREE…

Seal Rocks whilst the name suggests seals, there are none to be found, however the views are dramatic and sweep across the wild ocean. If you are desperate to see seals then 12 kilometres offshore, Reid Rocks is home to a major Australian fur seal breeding colony.

Grassy Harbour is a must see, it’s where the fairy penguin colony calls home.  A nightly occurrence, watch them return from their day at sea to nest in their burrows.

Lavinia Nature Reserve is a world renowned wetland bird habitat and worth having a look at or take the Copperhead Walk along rugged cliffs where you will arrive to see the remains of the 7000yr old Calcified Forest.

Disappointment Bay (accessible from Cape Wickham Rd) is perfect for walking the long stretches of white sand, swimming, surfing or paddling.

King Island Historical Museum, is an old lighthouse keepers’ cottage located in Currie. Learn about early pioneers, shipwrecks, sealers and soldier settlers. You can even see the Cape Wickham Lighthouse lens which is more than 150yrs old. Check opening/closing times which are limited.

Cape Wickham Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in Australia and Southern Hemisphere standing at 48mts tall. Over 150yrs old and made from locally quarried stone.

Come over and visit and step back in time where people are friendly, time is available and kids can enjoy freedoms they don’t on the mainland.
