PhotoAccess is the ACT and region’s centre for contemporary photography, film and video and media arts. An established non-profit incorporated association based at the Manuka Arts Centre in Canberra, we’re a friendly creative community making, sharing and investigating photographic culture in the interests of artistic expression, cultural participation and positive social change.
What do we do?
Our flagship Huw Davies Gallery presents a dynamic series of exhibitions featuring emerging and established photographers and photo-artists, together with accessible public talks, events and performances and artist residencies that foster critical debate about, understanding of and engagement with image practice. Periodically, we also curate and commission exhibitions with partner organisations and venues, such as East Hotel and ACT Libraries.
PhotoAccess supports a wide range of contemporary photo-media practices, and members enjoy mentored use of our well-maintained making spaces. We manage south-eastern Australia’s only publicly-accessible darkroom and encourage contemporary analogue practice through a range of exhibition, residency and skills-development opportunities. We also provide a digital imaging suite, with a focus on scanning facilities, and create opportunities for artists to make new work in film, video and digital multi-media.
We work to extend community access to the photographic arts, offering a wide range of creative workshops for adults and children and developing each year a range of award-winning outreach programs engaging those who have had few opportunities to explore the visual arts.
PhotoAccess welcomes new members, whether you’re an established photo-media artist, an aspiring documentary photographer or someone just coming to grips with your new DSLR.
PhotoAccess acknowledges the Ngunnawal people as the traditional custodians of the ACT and surrounding areas. We honour and respect their ongoing cultural and spiritual connections to this country and the contribution they make to the life of this city and this region. We aim to respect cultural heritage, customs and beliefs of all Indigenous people.
