RELICS: A New World Rises

November 8, 2023 @ 9:00 am - January 28, 2024 @ 5:00 pm AEDT

LEGO Minifigures take over Melbourne Museum with the
opening of RELICS: A New World Rises
Head off on an epic scavenger hunt, get lost in a dystopian world where LEGO
minifigures rule and build your own retro-futuristic creation

Set in a future long after humanity’s reign, RELICS: A New World Rises is now open at Melbourne
Museum to inspire storytelling and provoke thought about sustainability.
Crafted by LEGO Masters winners Jackson Harvey and Alex Towler, RELICS comes direct from huge
success in Perth and Adelaide where it captivated both the young and young at heart. The
exhibition has become bigger and better since breaking attendance records at the South
Australian Museum, with more relics added, plus a ‘Build Their World’ play area.
RELICS: A New World Rises tells the story of a world where LEGO® minifigures have taken over,
creating intricate civilisations inside discarded human artefacts they now call home.
Through the fun and playful medium of LEGO, RELICS: A New World Rises confronts the questions
surrounding our own future, and challenges our perceptions about the stability of our current
reality.

‘Today, humans are producing and consuming at an unprecedented rate, and many of the
products that are manufactured today will outlive their creators by centuries,’ said Jackson

Harvey. ‘Everything we manufacture today will eventually impact our environment in some way,
including LEGO.’
The LEGO creations of a forgotten future have been crafted from used and salvaged materials,
including a large portion of the LEGO bricks which were acquired through second-hand suppliers.
‘The choice of the plastic brick as a medium to discuss topics of sustainability is an intentional
one, aimed at drawing attention to the way our society uses, recycles and discards our material
world,’ said Alex Towler. ‘The LEGO minifigures make creative and sometimes absurd
interpretations of each object, challenging the audience to consider what they throw away, and
where it ends up.
‘Just as the minifigures are navigating their strange new world, we are left wondering how to
navigate our own.’
Museums Victoria Director & CEO Lynley Crosswell said she hopes the exhibition will inspire
meaningful conversations about sustainability and the choices that we make for our shared
future.
‘We are delighted to present RELICS: A New World Rises at Melbourne Museum, where LEGO sparks
the imagination while inviting contemplation about our material world and its impact on the
environment’.
