AFL South Coast
Established in 1969, AFL South Coast oversees community Australian Rules football across the Illawarra and Shoalhaven regions. For more than five decades, it has supported local clubs, players, and volunteers, helping footy grow into a well-organised and inclusive community sport.
AFL South Coast manages three main competitions: AFL South Coast Seniors, AFL Shoalhaven Juniors, and AFL Illawarra Juniors. The Under-15s and Under-17s competitions are now combined under the AFL South Coast Juniors banner, creating a clearer and more consistent pathway for young players as they move through the system.
The organisation works closely with AFL NSW/ACT staff across coaching, umpiring, game development, and club support. This backing helps ensure high standards across competitions and provides guidance for clubs, coaches, umpires, and volunteers at every level.
Clubs across the region stretch from Woonona in the north to Ulladulla in the south. This wide footprint reflects the strong connection local communities have to the game, with many clubs built on decades of involvement from families and volunteers. AFL South Coast operates from the Sportshub at the University of Wollongong, where staff provide support and can meet with clubs and community members as needed.
Kids Football
Kids football is a key focus of AFL South Coast, with clear programs designed to suit different ages and experience levels.
NAB AFL Auskick (Ages 4–7)
NAB AFL Auskick is the starting point for young children who want to try Australian Football. Kids can begin in the calendar year they turn five, and no previous experience is required. Sessions are based on simple games that introduce basic skills such as kicking, catching, and movement.
Auskick sessions run for one hour per week, which works well for busy family schedules. There is no requirement for special equipment, as children can wear comfortable clothes and runners. Groups are organised by age, with optional all-girls groups available. Parents are welcome to help out or encourage from the sidelines.
Children also receive added extras, including a footy pack, an Auskick Junior Club Membership for an AFL club of their choice, and chances to take part in half-time activities at AFL and AFLW matches.
NAB AFL Superkick (Ages 7–12)
For kids aged 7 to 12, NAB AFL Superkick offers a relaxed way to develop skills without the pressure of full competition. It is open to all children, regardless of experience or background.
Superkick is tackle-free and game-based, with sessions held at one location once a week. Modified games allow kids to practise skills at their own pace while staying active and involved. All-girls programs, including Team Tayla, provide an option for girls who prefer to play in a dedicated group.
Superkick often acts as the link between Auskick and junior club football, helping kids build confidence and understand the game before moving into formal competitions.
AFL Nines (Ages 13+)
Older kids and teenagers can take part in AFL Nines, a social version of the game played with nine players per side on a smaller field. Tackling is replaced with one-handed touch, making it safe and accessible. It suits beginners, teens looking for a low-pressure option, or families who want to play together.
Things to do in South Coast
The South Coast offers plenty to enjoy alongside local footy. Families can spend time at beaches, coastal walks, parks, and local cafés throughout the Illawarra and Shoalhaven. Weekend matches often become a social outing, with kids playing sport while parents connect with other families.
AFL South Coast is part of everyday life in the region, bringing people together through sport, shared effort, and community involvement.
