Ben Lomond Alpine Resort
Ben Lomond Alpine Resort is Tasmania’s only commercial ski resort and a top destination for year-round mountain adventure. Located in the heart of Ben Lomond National Park, this alpine retreat offers breathtaking scenery, thrilling outdoor activities, and fun for all ages.
Set above 1,500 metres on a vast dolerite plateau, the resort is home to some of Tasmania’s highest peaks. Its elevated location ensures snow coverage from mid-June to late September, thanks to advanced snow-making equipment.
Ben Lomond
Ben Lomond’s winter season draws skiers, snowboarders and families for snow play, tobogganing and scenic views. The resort is family-friendly, offering equipment hire, lessons, and easy access to the slopes. Non-skiers can still enjoy the cosy alpine village atmosphere, complete with hot drinks and mountain views.
During summer, the snow melts to reveal a dramatic alpine landscape. Visitors can hike through trails surrounded by colourful wildflowers, climb the park’s iconic dolerite cliffs, or cycle along mountain roads. Wildlife is abundant—look out for wombats, wallabies, and pademelons along the trails.
The area is famous for Jacobs Ladder, a winding, six-hairpin gravel road that leads to the summit. It’s one of Australia’s most photographed alpine roads and a thrilling experience for drivers, cyclists, and walkers alike. At the top, a viewing platform offers stunning panoramic views across northeast Tasmania.
Ben Lomond Tasmania
Ben Lomond is just an hour’s drive from Launceston, making it perfect for a day trip or weekend escape. The drive follows scenic roads and leads to Ben Lomond Base, the ideal place to start your journey. The Base offers a visitor centre, licensed café, rental services, and seasonal facilities. In winter, snow chains are available for hire (mandatory between June and September), while in summer, e-bikes are offered for exploring.
For active families, Ben Lomond features excellent hiking trails of varying lengths. Short walks like the Summit Link Track offer gentle alpine strolls, while longer routes such as Alpine Village to Little Hell and Alpine Village to Lower Carpark provide scenic challenges with rewarding views. The area’s unique geology, with towering rock columns and expansive boulder fields, attracts experienced rock climbers from across the country.
Mountain biking is another summer highlight. Though bikes are restricted to formed gravel roads, the resort partners with Mountain Bike Tasmania for guided descents on thrilling terrain. The Ben Lomond Descent is one of the most exciting rides in Tasmania, catering to adventure seekers.
Those seeking a more relaxed pace can enjoy birdwatching or gentle walks through forested foothills. The area is home to over 200 plant species and showcases spectacular wildflower displays in warmer months.
