Central Deborah Gold Mine

Bendigo was once the richest producer of gold in the world, yielding over 700,000kg between 1851-1954, which would be worth a staggering $68 billion in today’s prices.

At Central Deborah Gold Mine, you have the unique opportunity to explore an authentic gold mine which operated on the wealthy Bendigo goldfield, allowing your family to experience what life as a miner was really like during the goldrush era.

DESCEND UNDERGROUND

Don a hard hat and light to descend 61 metres underground on a Mine Experience Tour. It is not until you take your first step underground and feel the drop in temperature, the dampness in the air, the deafening sound of silence, and experience your eyes trying to adjust to pure darkness, that you can truly put yourself in the shoes of past gold miners. Explore the honeycomb of underground workings with an expert tour guide, witness traditional mining equipment in action, see gold in its natural state, and hear tales about the miners who toiled far below Bendigo’s surface.

STRIKE GOLD ON THE SURFACE

Step inside heritage-listed buildings, view the towing 22-metre high poppet head, and see the treasure trove of machinery which was essential to the mine’s operation. Afterwards, your family can try their hand at panning for gold, with finders’ keepers!
