It takes about ten minutes to take the ride across Cataract Gorge and First Basin. It is about 457 metres (1462 feet) from station to station, with a central span between two pylons of 308 metres (985 feet), believed to be the longest single span of any chairlift in the world.
They are open at 9:00am, 365 days a year. Please note their seasonal closing times.
- Winter – 4:30pm
- Spring & Autumn – 5:00pm
- Summer – 5:30pm
The Basin Cafe
Sit down and let the generous glasswork of the café mesmerise you while you relish an uninterrupted view of the Cataract Gorge during breakfast, mid-morning tea, or lunch. If you’re in the mood for adventure and time is running short, you can simply swing by our takeout counter for a swift meal.
The Basin Café is open for Breakfast, Lunch, Morning and Afternoon Tea from 9am onwards seven days a week.
Swimming
Over the warmer months, visitors flock to the Gorge to swim in the pool and the basin. And over winter, the pool is drained and is prone to flooding.
A safety fence surrounds the swimming pool and lifeguards are on duty at peak times. Visitors may swim in the basin at their own discretion.
Playground
Set up a picnic, relax on the green grass and let your children run free to explore their surroundings.
Amenities
There are toilets located at both sides of the Gorge. Changing rooms are located on the West Launceston Side. BBQ facilities are in a number of locations for free public use (kindly clean up after use).
