Kalis Hospitality

Kalis Hospitality, an entirely Tasmanian owned and operated business with over 40 years of experience through the Kalis Group, specialises in providing family-friendly hotels, bistros, and accommodation options across the state. Managed by CEO Alexia Kalis and Executive Director Emmanuel Kalis, the group has grown significantly since acquiring its first venue in 2002. Today, they offer welcoming hubs where parents, children, and grandparents can relax, enjoy hearty meals, and find comfortable places to stay.

Black Buffalo Hotel

Established as the group’s very first location in North Hobart, the Black Buffalo Hotel is a long-standing local institution. Situated at 14 Federal Street, it sits on major bus routes and is highly accessible for families exploring the Hobart central business district. The venue provides traditional, hearty bistro meals, an easy drive-through bottleshop, and a large car park that simplifies arrival for families travelling with children. Beyond dining, it features affordable, comfortable en-suite accommodation available year-round, making it a practical base for families who want to stay close to the city’s main sights.

Kingston Hotel

Located just a ten-minute drive from Hobart, the Kingston Hotel is purposely set up to cater to families. The venue features an indoor kids’ play area attached directly to the bistro, allowing parents and grandparents to dine in comfort while keeping an eye on the children. On-site accommodation options are also available, presenting an excellent choice for family groups requiring easy access to the capital city.

Cooleys Hotel

Situated at 45 Main Road in Moonah, Cooleys Hotel serves as an excellent gathering spot for families seeking a casual lunch or dinner. The bistro area is complemented by a spacious, all-weather beer garden. This sheltered outdoor area makes it a highly versatile space for family meals or casual catch-ups, ensuring a comfortable experience regardless of the Tasmanian weather.

Beachfront Bicheno

For families journeying along Tasmania’s stunning East Coast, Beachfront Bicheno offers a seaside retreat at 232 Tasman Highway. Positioned within easy walking distance of the beach and Bicheno town centre, it is an ideal stopover, located approximately two and a half hours from Hobart and two hours from Launceston.

The property boasts 50 generously sized hotel rooms alongside three specific two-bedroom apartments. Families can choose from several room types depending on their needs:

  • Poolside Suites: These sleep up to three guests with a king and a single bed, opening out onto a balcony and a grass area right by the swimming pool, where children love to play.
  • Seaview Family Suites: Designed to sleep four, these feature a king bed and two single beds in a separate room, plus a balcony to enjoy coastal sunrises over Waub’s Bay.
  • Family Apartments: These two-bedroom, pet-friendly options include a fully self-contained kitchen, a large lounge room, a dining table, and access to an outdoor area with a barbecue.

Guests enjoy complimentary parking, a swimming pool area, and close proximity to local attractions such as penguin tours, beaches, and the nearby Douglas Apsley and Freycinet national parks.

Kings Meadows

Moving further north into the Launceston area, the Kings Meadows venue provides another reliable choice for family travellers. It features a friendly public bar and bistro setup that functions as a welcoming local meeting place. Complete with dining, gaming, and convenient accommodation, it gives families a consistent and trustworthy hospitality option when touring the northern parts of the state.

Beltana Hotel

Perched on the Eastern Shore at 160 East Derwent Highway in Lindisfarne, the Beltana Hotel provides family dining with beautiful scenery. The large, classic bistro features cosy alcove seating inside a spacious dining room that looks out across uninterrupted views of the Derwent River and the Tasman Bridge. The menu features traditional pub favourites like chicken parmigianas, steaks, and fresh Tasmanian seafood, alongside smaller share plates and an extensive sports bar area with pool tables.

Long Boat Tavern

Connected directly to the Beachfront Bicheno property, the Long Boat Tavern is a classic, country-style coastal pub that has been serving locals and tourists since the early 1980s. Families can choose to dine inside the welcoming dining room or out on the Alfresco Deck, which overlooks Waub’s Bay. The tavern focuses on classic pub meals alongside seasonal specials that highlight local Tasmanian produce. It is deeply embedded in the local community, regularly hosting live entertainment, seasonal events like Jive in July, and Friday night meat raffles that support the Bicheno Surf Life Saving Club and the Little Crays Youth Club.

Kids Eat Free

To make family dining simpler and more cost-effective across these locations, Kalis Group runs a dedicated “Kids Eat Free” initiative. Parents can enjoy a fuss-free family dinner where purchasing any adult main meal entitles them to one free children’s meal to feed the team easily. Visitors can quickly scan a QR code at the venue to check the current menu and secure a table booking, making dinner plans entirely stress-free.
