Through hands-on, interactive experiences and engaging exhibitions, MoAD brings to life the story of Australia’s rich democratic history and how our democracy works today.
A Building with a Storied Past
MoAD is housed inside Old Parliament House, a heritage-listed building that was once home to Australia’s federal Parliament from 1927 to 1988. Today, the building remains a true “people’s place”. Walk through historic rooms, stand where leaders once stood and experience the spaces where history unfolded.

MoAD offers a range of accessible exhibitions designed with families in mind.
Younger visitors love PlayUP – a free, hands-on exhibition with craft, stories and games to educate and challenge young minds!
Beyond PlayUP, kids can explore their role in shaping Australia’s future in Democracy DNA and learn about the events, debates and decisions that shaped our nation.
The new Press Gallery exhibition explores the role of the press in our democracy – inviting kids to jump behind the mic, try radio broadcasting, and experiment with equipment from decades past.
There are plenty of ways for visitors of all ages to discover the people, ideas and events that have shaped the nation.
Taking a MoAD Tour
A guided tour is a great way for families to experience Old Parliament House together. Led by friendly and knowledgeable guides, tours share the stories behind the rooms, people and moments that shaped Australia.

Getting Around in MoAD
MoAD is open daily from 9am to 5pm and entry is free, making it an easy and affordable day out for families.
The museum is located at Old Parliament House in Canberra and is easy to reach by car or public transport. Paid parking, free accessible parking and drop-off areas are available at the front and nearby, and several bus stops are within a short walk.
