Theatre Royal Hobart

Theatre Royal Hobart

Opening in 1837, Hobart’s Theatre Royal has been the home of contemporary theatre in Tasmania for more than 185 years and is Australia’s oldest working theatre. This 700-seat national treasure occupies an important place in the hearts of Tasmanians and many visitors to Hobart.

Since 2020, the Theatre Royal has occupied The Hedberg, a world class performing arts precinct in the heart of Hobart, Tasmania. The facility is shared with the University of Tasmania. It incorporates the original Theatre Royal building into a contemporary multi-use performing arts facility. These new spaces  – including three levels of foyers and bars, and a new 285-seat Studio Theatre, have provided many new opportunities for audiences to engage with the performing arts.

Have you ever wondered what happens backstage at a theatre? Take a guided tour and experience this beautiful Tasmanian treasure! Hear entertaining stories about the theatre’s history and the performers who have graced the stage.

The Theatre Royal Hobart wants everyone to enjoy the magic of live theatre, especially kids! They have special programs designed to help young people learn about and experience performing arts.

Education & Learning Programs: These programs offer online education recourses about a performance at the theatre, or Q&A sessions where they can ask questions to the actors after a show.

Future Stages: This program is perfect for older kids (Year 10 to 12) who are interested in theatre. They get to see productions and participate in discussions and workshops that connect them with the performing arts sector. There’s no cost to apply or participate!
