The National Zoo and Aquarium is proud to recognise World Rhino Day on 22 September, shining a light on the plight of rhinos in the wild and the critical role that zoos, conservation organisations, and communities play in their survival. We will be marking this important day with special activities this Sunday, 21 September, including a Rhino Keeper talk.

With all species of rhino under threat from poaching and habitat loss, World Rhino Day serves as a vital reminder of the importance of education, funding, and conservation action. Through experiences such as rhino encounters with our White Rhinos, Ubuntu and Eco, behind-the-scenes tours, and community events, the National Zoo and Aquarium helps guests connect with rhinos while raising essential support for global conservation initiatives.

Funds raised at the zoo contribute to organisations such as TRAFFIC, a leading wildlife trade monitoring network that works to combat poaching and the illegal wildlife trade. By supporting these conservation partners, every visitor plays a part in helping safeguard rhinos for future generations.

As part of the zoo’s recognition of World Rhino Day, media are invited to speak with Director and General Manager Paul Whitehorn about the current state of rhino conservation, how guest experiences at the National Zoo and Aquarium make a difference, and the Zoo’s ongoing efforts to contribute to international programs.
