Visit Ballarat

BALLARAT has long been defined as the city at the heart of Australia’s goldfields. And while history and heritage remain among its strongest drawcards, there is an array of contemporary and diverse offerings to keep the entire family entertained for days on end.

As you learn more about the city, you will discover the melting pot that is Ballarat — a pot of gold, art, culture, food, wine and attractions, set against an iconic heritage backdrop.

Explore the magic of the 1850s at one of Australia’s most popular outdoor museums – Sovereign Hill. Try your luck gold-panning, take a mine tour and indulge in a bag of iconic raspberry drops.

Then head back into the city to find your place in one of the city’s family-friendly cafes for a cosy brunch. Hit up Little Bird for some delicious meals for the kids, or find your place at The Hydrant Foodhall and watch the little ones unleash their creativity as you savour your coffee.

Take a drive to the Ballarat Wildlife Park and get up-close-and-personal with some cuddly koalas and wombats, marvel at the cheeky meerkats and hand-feed the friendly free-roaming kangaroos. Around the park you’ll also see Sumatran Tigers, crocodiles, penguins, giant tortoises, dingoes, emus and reptiles of all shapes and sizes.

Head on into the Art Gallery of Ballarat – Australia’s oldest and largest regional art gallery – and take your time as you walk through the permanent collection of historic fine art, indigenous and contemporary art. Many of the works on display are accompanied by questions for the children, so they too can immerse themselves in the stunning works.
Make sure you also explore one of Australia’s only medieval theme parks, Kryal Castle.

There is plenty to do for the children with jousting demonstrations, potion-making workshops and a medieval maze.

Get comfortable at one of the city’s family-friendly restaurants for a generous dinner.  The CBD is filled with perfect dining options including The Forge Pizzeria, Golden City Hotel, Zagames Ballarat and The Western Hotel.
